Quick answer: Can you get a Private Pilot License with glasses or imperfect vision?

Yes and don't worry lots of pilots fly safely with their glasses or contacts in all their years of flying. One of aviation's most enduring myths is that you need to have some kind of super-sharp eyesight to fly a plane. Not true. If you can see okay with your specs on, you're just fine.

To get a private pilot's license in the US you need a Third-Class Airman Medical Certificate. The rules for vision on this third class medical are way more relaxed than for commercial pilots or airline transport pilots. Here's the basic requirement: a distant visual acuity of 20/40 in each eye, with or without Glasses or contacts.

What counts is how you see with your glasses or contacts on not how you see on your own. So if you score 20/40 on the eye chart with your specs on, you meet the standard. The FAA totally allows glasses and contacts to sort out the vision requirements.

All tests are conducted for each eye separately with or without corrective lenses. If you need correction to meet FAA standards, your class medical certificate will carry a limitation noting that you must wear corrective lenses while exercising pilot privileges.

Distant vision requirements for private pilots

Distant vision is normally tested at 20 feet using a standard Snellen chart essentially the same process you'd experience at a routine optometrist visit. You do not need natural 20/20 vision. If you can hit 20/40 while wearing your prescription, you meet FAA vision standards.

If you only pass the test with glasses or a contact lens in place, the aviation medical examiner will note on your FAA medical certificate that corrective lenses are required. If your distant vision changes over time, simply update your prescription and maintain compliance at your next medical renewal.

Near (and intermediate) vision requirements

Near vision matters because cockpit tasks demand it constantly reading charts, GPS screens, tablets, checklists, and fine-print instrument markings all rely on sharp close-range acuity.

For a third class medical, near vision must be 20/40 or better at 16 inches in each eye separately, with or without corrective lenses. This 16-inch testing distance simulates the normal reading distance for approach plates and cockpit materials.

For pilots over about age 40–50, presbyopia (age-related near-vision decline) is common and entirely manageable. Reading glasses, bifocals, or progressive lenses all work. Pilots aged 50 and older need 20/40 vision at 32 inches as well, which tests intermediate vision relevant to instrument panels.

There is no intermediate vision requirement for a third-class medical certificate in general that formal standard mainly applies to higher medical classes and certain roles. However, many pilots benefit from lenses optimized for both tablet distance and panel distance.

Near vision standards use the same 20/40 threshold across all medical classes, even though distant vision is stricter for commercial pilots and airline transport pilots.

As of New Year's Day 2025, any pilots applying for the first time have got to take a computer-based color vision test (bye bye, plate-based tests of yesteryear)

How corrective eye surgery (LASIK, PRK, refractive surgery) affects a PPL

If your uncorrected vision after the eye surgery is 20/40 or better in each eye, then your medical may no longer carry a 'must wear glasses' note. But, of course, that's not always the case if it's not good enough, you'll still have to wear glasses or contact lenses which is perfectly fine.

But, where things get tricky is when you get complications like glare, halos, or dry eye that really mess up your vision and threaten to jeopardize your certification. And in some cases, this might even need extra FAA approval or a special arrangement. One thing to watch for is problems with night vision even if your daytime vision is fine.

Always get the lowdown from an aviation medical examiner before you book your refractions, they can give you the word on what you need to document and how long you'll have to wait before you can get back in the air.
