Quick question: how many categories of airport does the FAA actually recognize? If you said "towered and nontowered," you're only describing how they operate, not what they legally are. There are actually five distinct airport categories baked into federal law, and the one you're probably flying out of most weekends is technically the largest group in the entire national airport system, even though it usually gets the least attention in ground school.
